Willie rode at a time when there was great competition around. He was up against other stars of the turf including Lester Piggott and Pat Eddery. Despite this he still managed to carve out 3828 winners during his career. This puts him in fourth place behind Gordon Richards, Piggott and Eddery. There are also a number of class horses that he was associated with and this led to him winning seventeen classics. This haul included four Derbys on Troy (1979), Henbit (1980), Nashwan (1989) and Erhaab (1994). He was also champion jockey five times.
